Things to do in Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen valley is lined with 72 waterfalls, dropping straight off the limestone cliffs on either side of a single road that runs down to Stechelberg. The Staubbach falls, 297 metres, hang right above the village and are lit up on summer evenings.

The Trummelbach falls are different: a funicular takes you inside the mountain to see ten glacier-fed cascades carved through the rock, entry CHF 14 for adults, allow at least an hour. Getting here from Lucerne takes around 2 hours by train via Interlaken Ost, with a change onto the narrow-gauge line.

Most day-trippers stop for one hour, photograph the Staubbach, and leave without reaching Stechelberg or the Trummelbach falls at all, which is where the valley actually earns the trip.
