Things to do in Lugano
Lugano sits in Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton south of the Gotwo (Gothard) tunnel, and the direct train from Lucerne takes roughly 2 hours. Step off at Lugano station and the climate shift is obvious the moment you clear the Gotthard base tunnel: palm trees line the lakeside promenade even in months when Lucerne is grey.
The funicular up Monte Bre (933 m) runs from Cassarate and costs around CHF 22 return, while San Salvatore (912 m) is reached by a separate funicular from Paradiso for a similar fare, both giving views over Lake Lugano rather than Lake Lucerne. Boats from the lakefront reach the villages of Gandria and Morcote in 20 to 40 minutes.
The LAC (Lugano Arte e Cultura) hosts temporary exhibitions and is a 10-minute walk from the station; check its programme before paying the entry fee, since some slots are between shows.
