Things to do in Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Zermatt sits roughly 3 hours 15 minutes from Lucerne by train, with at least one change at Visp, and the village itself stays car-free: park at Tasch (CHF 15-17 a day) and finish the last 5 minutes by shuttle train.

The Gornergrat Bahn climbs to 3,089 m in about 33 minutes for CHF 108 return in high season, and on a clear day it delivers the classic Matterhorn view; on a cloudy one it does not, so check the forecast before buying. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise goes higher still, to 3,883 m, with a return ticket around CHF 130.

5-3 hours between Sunnegga and Blauherd, with genuine Matterhorn reflections at Stellisee on a windless morning rather than the postcard promise sold in town.
