Which day trips from Lucerne can I realistically do in a single day?
Zurich (about 45 minutes by train), Interlaken (about 50 minutes) and Bern (about an hour ten) are comfortable day trips with hours to spare. Basel, St Gallen and Chur fall in the same category. Ticino and the wider Bernese Oberland stretch a day trip to its limit, and Zermatt, St Moritz and the Engadine are better as overnights.

Is Zermatt worth visiting as a day trip from Lucerne?
It's possible — the train takes around two hours ten minutes each way with a change in Spiez — but it leaves only a handful of hours under the Matterhorn after roughly four and a half hours on trains. Most visitors who want to see Zermatt properly, including a cable car up to Gornergrat, are better off staying one night.
Can I see the Bernese Oberland in one day from Lucerne?
You can reach Interlaken in about fifty minutes and see Lauterbrunnen's waterfalls or ride up to Grindelwald in the same day, but the Jungfraujoch itself is a long, expensive add-on that turns a day trip into a very early start and a very late return. An overnight in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen removes that pressure.
Is the Black Forest and Lake Constance day trip from Lucerne worth the border crossing?
Yes, for a change of pace — Konstanz and Meersburg sit on the German side of Lake Constance, and Freiburg im Breisgau is within reach of a long day, with Bregenz in Austria nearby too. It's a genuinely cross-border day out, and a passport or ID card valid for Schengen travel is all that's needed for most nationalities.
