Things to do in Montreux and Chillon

5 hours to walk the courtyards and dungeons. The town's lakeside promenade runs past the Freddie Mercury statue, a fixture for photos rather than a sight in itself. Above the town, the Rochers-de-Naye cogwheel railway climbs to 2,042 metres in about an hour, CHF 82 return from Montreux, with views back over the lake on clear days.

A short bus or train ride east reaches Lavaux, the terraced vineyard above the water, good for an hour or two of walking between villages. Coming from Lucerne, this is realistically a full day out rather than a stopover.
