Things to do at the Rhine Falls
The Rhine Falls at Neuhausen are the largest waterfall in Europe by volume, dropping 23 metres over a 150-metre-wide rock shelf. From Lucerne it is roughly 1 hour 45 minutes by train, usually changing in Zurich, to Schaffhausen or Neuhausen Rheinfall station, a short walk from the viewing platforms.
Small boats run from the jetties below both banks out to the central rock, where steps lead to a platform right above the water; a return trip costs around CHF 9 to 12 depending on the dock. On the south side, 16th-century Laufen Castle sits directly over the falls and includes a terrace and viewing gallery, entry about CHF 5.
Ten minutes away by bus or a 25-minute walk, Schaffhausen's old town has the 16th-century Munot fortress, free to climb, with views over the Rhine. Arrive before 9am or after 5pm to avoid coach-tour crowds at the main platforms.
